Galleys or ARCs (advanced reader copies) are sent to booksellers to encourage them to order the book; to magazines and newspapers for review/interview purposes; and to other writers for possible endorsement (blurbs). They're sent several months in advance to allow ample timeto fulfill each goal. If you've ever been to the back room of a bookstore or to a book editor's office, you'll see these stacked floor to ceiling. It's a tough old world out there trying to get attention for your beloved book.
